Elric Miault

Giving prominence to dream, imagination, impulses of the soul, of the heart and of the spirit, his paintings give the impression of reaching the Divine, without ever unraveling the mysteries. Elric Miault’s work is undoubtedly of a universal nature, and a kindred spirit to the visionary Gustave Moureau who posited that “painting is the language of God”.

Born in France in 1977, Elric Miault spent part of his childhood in overseas territories, such as French Guyana, New Caledonia and Tahiti. Eighteen-year-old Elric then moved to Greenwich Village in New York, NY, and devoted himself to writing and drawing. There, he created his first series of paintings, which were exhibited at a business party in Rhode Island. It was a huge success: all the paintings were sold. As the experience proved to be conclusive, the young artist decided to become a professional painter. In 1996, Elric Miault exhibited fourteen of his paintings at the Revel Gallery in Soho. Numerous worldwide exhibitions followed since, notably in Tokyo, Kyoto, Genève, Paris, Monaco, Stockholm, Madrid, Casablanca. His works are in numerous private collections and Museums, among which are; the Vatican Museum, the French Museum of Legion of Honor and Knighthood, the Museum of Marrakech, and the Adolphe de Rothschild Foundation.

Elric Miault’s painting is unique and of a universal nature. One feels an intense joy in being captivated by these pictorial jewels, which, day after day, incessantly reveal new messages. The artist’s various techniques beautifully combine tradition and innovation by the use of gold, silver, copper, bronze and colors made out of minerals, pigments and lacquer. The glints of gold and the iridescence of precious stones convey a magical spirit to the symbolism of his works. Unique and original, Miault’s painting was born from an alchemist quest. The artist draws inspiration from the cosmic immensity of the Creation and, in particular, in the mineral world of Gaia, the Earth, which he surveyed on numerous journeys.

Using gold, silver, copper, bronze, pigments, minerals and lacquer, the alchemist painter carries out transmutations, thus creating paintings with shimmering and glittering reflections, which change according to the light. Depending on whether it is dawn, noon or twilight, the gold blazes or goes out, the lacquer shines or fades away, conveying images and creating a fascinating universe, which inspire a fertile daydream. Abstracto-lyricism is the name that Elric Miault chose, if one were needed, to depict his style. The symbolist themes drawn from the cultural contributions of cosmology and speculative traditions (mythological, theological and philosophical), contribute to the magic of the Great Work.

The artist thus presents his alchemical vision of the universe and his quest for a universal pictorial language that would be the key, thanks to its evocative power. These visions of light and gold, which evade the shade by spreading their wings, allow access to a sacred world where the symbolic force would preserve the mystery, as in alchemy. Like a visionary poet, Elric Miault uses richer, freer microcosmic ingredients to evoke macrocosm and its divine secrets. By inventing this new language, the artist found his philosopher’s stone.
